The Trump Era
Months before trump was elected, the thought and idea of Donald Trump ever becoming the president of the United States stuck almost everyone as a joke. It really is a crazy thing that someone with a history like Donald Trump could ever be the president. After it came out that he did indeed win the election there was mixed feelings by the population of the United States, varying from Joyful to terrified and a couple in between. It is a huge event in our history and it is seen all over, from social media, radio, news, to in our classrooms and it is crazy how open people are with voicing there opinions. So much so that I have almost witnessed fights in some of my classes just because of people disagreeing about wether its right or wrong that Donald Trump is our president.
Coming into office Trump had a a bunch of things he planned on changing and things he planned on putting unto action. Some of which personally I think are good ideas but a lot of the way that he went about communicating and representing these ideas to the public were poorly done. Donald Trump told the crowd gathered at his New York headquarters to hear the mogul’s first campaign speech. “They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.”(POLITICO MAGAZINE). Out of this I can certain understand how this can strike many people in the wrong way. Although he is looking to overall benefit the population and people of the United States by taking certain people out. The way that he groups people together and labels them as a whole is wrong, not everyone that is here that has a green card or not is not automatically a bad person. In many of my classes I have had foreigners and people that have traveled to this country legally and have a green card have expressed there fears of Trump being president, I don't quite understand where these fears are coming from when they are already here and a citizen. He is stating that he wants to get all of the illegal immigrants out of the country, not legal citizens.
While Trump is too open with his words and doesn't act like a president with certain words he chooses and certain actions he goes about making he does have other qualities that makes him to be a strong leader. Trump is smart economically and having had dealt with money for his entire life he is smart with his money and is really looking to help the United States get out of debt and create more jobs for people. "Donald Trump can actually operate and economy and bring America back into insolvency, by creating actual jobs and by expanding our worth as a world leader rather than being indebted and playing second fiddle to foreign nations."(Discuss Much). This is something that America is in need of, considering how much debt our country is in and how little our previous presidents have been able to do about it. Although he may be going at it all aggressively he really has just represented that he is going to do everything possibly to reverse this problem that we have been seeing economically in our country. A lot of things he has talked about was canceling certain fundings that we have been doing in attempt to conserve and spend our money on different and more appropriate needs for our country.

The purpose of our class is to examine strategies and tactics of persuasion - especially as seen in the competing narratives which evolve from current events. This post seems to be a statement of your opinion regarding the election of Mr. Trump - rather than an effort to identify a storyline or an event that will become the focus of your term paper.
ReplyDeleteWhile your sentiments about Trump - a "joke," a "crazy thing," that he "doesn't act like a president," etc. - are fairly popular (especially in left-leaning media reports), please remember that our class is not about trying to persuade anyone that your opinion is valid or correct. Also, the second part of your post seems to suddenly veer into a different direction where you seem to say that Trump is "smart economically" and therefore represents "something that America is in need of."
I would appreciate a chance to meet with you to discuss the direction you wish to take for your term paper. This post is too broad and vague to serve as a valid starting point. You seem to want to focus on the election of Trump as the source of your competing narratives - but that is simply too general. It's true that the professional media industry has "taken sides" with regard to the new president, but this assignment is meant to be an opportunity to dig deep into the way a particular event is being reported.
Please come see me as soon as you can.
Before we look at advertisements and all these different forms of media, people will always have there own opinion and build there own thoughts about current events. People who are for the republican party probably would lean towards trump and and people who are democrats tend to lean more towards Hillary. However with all of these forms of media and advertisements peoples opinions are changed a little bit do to the persuasion of the ads and the situation.
DeleteDonald Trump is liked and hated by many, for many different reasons. In one article that I was looking at as far as reasons for why people “should” vote for Trump, they authors went about many different styles of persuasion in explaining why Trump was a good presidential choice. Being that it is the presidential election and there aren't all that many choices to pick from to pick a president for our country, this article uses a technique that shows the negatives, not in reasoning why Trump is necessarily the right choice, but why Hillary would be the wrong choice. This is a very, and was a very effective form of persuasion in bringing up the negatives of the other candidate or negatives of the competitors. Using this as a persuasion method works well because even if you don't necessary know about or like per say, it makes you dislike and not want to choose the other option. For example, a article by the Huffington Post states, “If you need one reason to vote for the Donald, it’s this one. He isn’t nasty crooked Hillary’. ‘He would never lie* to the American public about his actions while in office.**”(huffingtonpost). This is very effective way about persuading voters because these are all true things that are very good reasons for people to not vote for the other candidate.
Trump is a has gone about and acted very differently than any other candidates that we have seen so far. The way he conducts his speeches and certain things that he says has offended many people. I don't blame many people for feeling the way they do about him, it is Trumps fault, along with the media that use trump against himself and makes any group of people that don't like him not like him even more. I thought that this one article I found did a very good job in explaining certain points where Trump was very un-presidential and making those that fall under the category this part of his campion. “Trump has called Mexican immigrants criminals and rapists, proposed registering all Muslims and said of a African-American protester, “Maybe he should have been roughed up because it was absolutely disgusting what he was doing.” If you’re not white and Christian, you might worry a little about a Trump Presidency.”(themoderatevoice). This was a very persuasive piece in that people of other countries that aren't “white” per say have heard Trump say things involving these incorrect, wrong and prejudice judgements, and then read an article like this it makes them identify with this article. Let alone the fact that they didn't like him before, this persuades them to dislike him even more than before.
This post is poorly written - with careless use of capital letters and punctuation. Therefore, it is very difficult to discern the focus.
DeletePlease remember that our class is not meant to be an exercise in expressing your own opinion, but about recognizing and analyzing persuasive strategies and techniques as observed in the current public sphere. Please cite sources properly.
